My classes offer experienced and supportive guidance to beginners and intermediate students as they learn basic techniques of quiltmaking by hand or machine. Class topics include –

The Memory Quilt Block – An 8 week course to look at ways quilts have historically been used to commemorate people, places, events, causes by individuals and by groups. Techniques employed in memory quilts will be examined including the use of words, images, repurposed materials plus a full range of embroidery, piecing and appliqué.

Beginning Hand Piecing/Part 1 & 2 – Learn to design, cut, sew and assemble blocks into a top, add borders, prepare to quilt, stitch the layers together and finish edges. Part 2 covers curved piecing, non-square units, and aspects of the modern quilt movement.

Appliqué and Edges – A survey of appliqué techniques, historical and modern. An overview of the many ways to bind the edges of the quilt for various uses.

Confidence with Color for Quilters – Learn the vocabulary of color and how to analyze and create color schemes to make your quilts sizzle. Students assemble a notebook of many exercise pages for their own future reference.

T-shirt and Repurposed Fabric Quilts – Explore strategies for using re-purposed materials, including design, stabilizing, and construction techniques for a variety of woven and knit fabrics.

Landscapes and Images/ The Virtual Vacation – Begin with a reference photo to create an original appliqué of a place.

Log Cabin Improvisation – Log cabin quilts begin with a simple strategy of concentric rounds of strips and are a dizzyingly versatile way to create something new. A playful exercise in improvization.
